Career Compass™: A Smarter Way for Grade 9s to Choose Their Subjects
Every year, thousands of Grade 9 learners across South Africa face one of the biggest decisions of their school careers: choosing the subjects they will carry through to matric. For many families, it is a stressful guess, based on marks, friends' choices, or a hunch about what gets you a good job. At Online Counsellor, we believe there is a better way.
That is why we created the Online Counsellor Career Compass™.
What is the Career Compass?
The Career Compass™ is an online career guidance assessment built specifically for South African learners. It is not a personality quiz you finish in five minutes and forget about. It is a structured assessment that looks at the whole learner: their interests, their personality, their strengths, and the things that matter to them, like creativity, helping others, stability, or building something of their own.
The result is a clear, personal picture of where a learner's natural potential lies, and which careers actually fit that picture.
How does it work?
The learner completes the assessment online, at their own pace. The Career Compass™ then matches their results against more than 600 South African career pathways, each with real information on study routes, qualification levels, and what the path actually looks like.
One of the features we are most proud of is subject gatekeeping. The Career Compass™ flags subject choices that could quietly close doors later, so a learner does not find out in Grade 11 that their dream career needs maths they did not take. It also supports the CAPS, IEB, Cambridge, and IB curricula, so learners from different school systems get guidance that fits their reality.
Who is it for?
The Career Compass™ is for Grade 9 learners making subject choices, but parents get just as much out of it. The reports are written to be shared at the family dinner table, not locked away in counselling jargon. Schools can also use it to support their Grade 9 subject choice programmes.
Where can I try it?
